The team at Wilks Hearing Center has years of combined experience helping people with their hearing health. All of our professional team members have graduate degrees in audiology, are licensed by New York State, and each audiologist is certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Dr. Wilks and Dr. Carlson are Fellows of the American Academy of Audiology and are Board Certified by the American Board of Audiology.

Mary Lou Carlson, Au.D., FAAA

Director/Audiologist

Dr. Carlson has been with Wilks Hearing Center since 1986. She became the Director of the center in 2018. She received her Doctor of Audiology degree from the Arizona School of Health Sciences.

Dr. Carlson’s expertise in audiology and modern hearing aids makes her a sought-after speaker for local events.

Stuart R. Wilks, Au.D., FAAA

Audiologist/Director Emeritus

Dr. Wilks began his work in audiology in 1972 at the Lexington School for the Deaf, and later at Mount Sinai Medical Center. In 1978, he left Mount Sinai to operate the Wilks Hearing Center, which was founded by his father, in 1952. Dr. Wilks received his Doctor of Audiology degree from the Arizona School of Health Sciences.

Deena Kafka, Au.D.

Audiologist

Dr. Kafka received her Doctor of Audiology degree from the Long Island Consortium of Hofstra, Adelphi, and St. John’s University. She completed her clinical internship and residency at a variety of well respected private audiology practices where she received extensive training in diagnostic evaluations, hearing aid evaluations, and hearing aid fittings.

Carline Joseph, Au.D.

Audiologist

Dr. Carline Joseph earned her bachelors in Communication Science Disorders from St. John’s University and her Doctorate in Audiology from the New York Audiology Consortium. She has experience working in a variety of clinical settings, including an ENT, and private practice.

Dr. Joseph understands how hearing loss affects communication and quality of life as her grandmother had hearing loss. Her familial experience with hearing loss mixed with a hearing science class she took piqued her interest. Dr. Joseph then sought out audiology front office job opportunities as a sophomore in undergrad and found her calling. Now, she enjoys interacting and connecting with people, all while helping them connect through better hearing.

Outside of work, Dr. Joseph enjoys hiking, traveling/exploring new places, watching movies, and artistic activities.

Peggy Sullivan

Peggy Sullivan

Office Manager/Administrator

Peggy has been with Wilks Hearing Center since 1990. Peggy is who you will typically call when you need an appointment. She is responsible for determining patient health insurance benefits and coordinates billing activities.

Barbara Goldenberg

Patient Care Coordinator

Barbara began working at Wilks Hearing Center in 2010. She coordinates our services with other care providers and she is responsible for patient management and follow-up. She assists in orienting patients to amplification and provides overall support for the professional audiology staff.
